Minimalist aesthetics, long takes, deeply human stories, and a touch of dark humour – these are the defining features of the Romanian New Wave. Emerging in the early 2000s, this remarkable movement brought a breath of fresh air to European cinema. Rooted in the post-Ceaușescu reality, it reflects both the resilience and sharp social gaze of Romanian filmmakers, resonating closely with us in Ukraine.
The KISFF selection highlights directors who redefined cinematic language and once felt like a revelation on the international stage. Among them are Cristi Puiu, whose film earned Romania its first Golden Bear, and an early work of the cheeky visionary Radu Jude.
🎤 Films are screened in their original language with Ukrainian and English subtitles.
❗️These films may contain potentially triggering or disturbing elements, such as blood and violence.
