Out & Proud

Is it better to speak and stand out or to remain quiet? Sometimes reticence is not an option. In four stories the directors and their characters, using not only words, but also singing, dancing and even silence, reflect on gender and sexual identity, marginalization of LGBTQIA+ community, lesbian body in the patriarchy, social inequality and racism. Let's listen to them.

In these strange new times, we are forced to adjust by developing new habits and getting rid of some of the old ones. No handshakes. No hugs. Wear a mask. Stay 1,5 metres away from each other. Wash your hands. Stay at home. Keep your social distance, practice self-isolation...

Thus, inexplicably, you notice that your time in lockdown is slipping past so fast, bonds are getting stronger, as you are getting used to meeting via Zoom and Facetime. And one day, you look around and ask yourself... Is it necessary to leave isolation?

Ghost Spaces

Ruins, ghost spaces define the cracks of urban environments. These are spaces for rethinking, redefining, reappropriating by artists, researchers, activists. These are spaces seized, reconstructed, destructed by power and capital.

Cinemas in the Dominican Republic mark the transition from colonial to postcolonial times, the ruins of modernist buildings in Athens, Tripoli and Dnipro define the end of the era of utopian architecture, the abandoned infrastructure of the border city of Armenia determines the beginning of a free armed economic zone.

It would seem, how we can relate here, in Kyiv?

Switzerland, Greece / 2019, 16 min

The film tells the story of a group of teenagers wandering on the peripheries. They will cross a place kept under surveillance: Hellinikon. For six decades, Hellinikon was the only airport in Athens and it also hosted the Olympic Games infrastructure. Since then, weeds have invaded the ruins of sports facilities. As if sedimented, all the marks of its past are still inscribed in Hellinikon. Before the site is razed and transformed, before its memory disappears, the youths decide to get in it.

‘A Passage’ is a film which tackles the political economy and social ecology of border infrastructures in Southern Armenia. By focusing on two significant events that illustrate the dominant political shifts in the region, ‘A Passage’ looks at how processes of rapid militarization and neoliberalization have restructured these borders. These two events include the recent erasure of the historic Yerevan-Baku Railway; and the upcoming construction of an industrial Free Economic Zone (FEZ) planned precisely where the removed train infrastructure was housed. The film stitches together various contested sites of the region including Meghri’s abandoned airport, a functioning Soviet-era Copper and Molybdenum mine, a 16th century church the abandoned Karchivan and Meghri train stations and an abandoned rail tunnel that bridges the geopolitical boundary of Nakhchivan and Armenia.

Less is more: No ties

The films of this programme present different relationships to one’s surroundings. The characters of the films all deal - in their own way - with the idea of losing ties with the people around them or with the environment in which they evolve. It can be for political and racial reasons like in Red Ants Bite by Elene Naveriani, for a sense of freedom and friendship like in Eau vive by Lucia Martinez, or for the sake of group dynamics like in Kids by Michael Frei.

While the films presented in this programme are all very unique, they are also directed by filmmakers coming from all parts of Switzerland and depict the many voices of contemporary filmmaking in Switzerland.

Recycling elements of surrealism and cubism, this animated short by Theodore Ushev focuses on the relationship between art and war. Propelled by the exalting "invasion" theme from Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony (No. 7), the film presents imagery of combat fronts and massacres, leading us from Dresden to Guernica, from the Spanish Civil War to Star Wars. It is at once a symphony that serves the war machine, that stirs the masses, and art that mourns the dead, voices its outrage and calls for peace.

The dark theatre and the big screen. Sit back in wonder. Our love for cinema has often been articulated throughout the history of film and has become an equally popular and global topos: From a basement cinema in Berlin to a Senegalese place of longing, from nostalgic reverberations in Iran to natural screen shadow plays in Lithuania, we embark on what is essentially a passion journey — in eager anticipation of the moment the movie theatre is allowed to go dark again, and the screen — bright.

DEDICATED TO THE YOUTH OF THE WORLD II

Yarema Malashchuk, Roman Himey

Ukraine / 2019, 9 min

The focus of the film is the techno-rave Cxema and the youth, on which the camera is carefully focused the next morning after the event. The space of Dovzhenko's film-studio is transformed into a dancefloor, a synchronized crowd, spotlights, arrhythmic synthetic sound by Stanislav Tolkachev — the camera moves away and approaches, creating a sense of romantic "exaltation" and at the same time a modern "alienation". This is the place and meeting that the youth of Kyiv are waiting for and preparing for — this particular escape from everyday life, rejection of it — evokes strange feelings of modern ritual. But what does it mean? The film ends with "portraits", almost static shots, faces "after" utopia. Characters of the film are not ready to accept the new day and its old reality.

Concrete and unclear

Lera Malchenko, Oleksandr Hants

Ukraine / 2019, 31 min

[Collective dreaming in Ukrainian city] The abandoned hotel PARUS has been existing in the center of the Dnipro city for 50 years. It was built to become the symbol of grandeur of Dnepropetrovsk, as the birthplace of the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. Howewer the hotel was never opened — construction was stopped on the eve of the collapse of the Soviet Union. PARUS is an artifact of urban folklore and an element of urban identity — the font and logo of the city also refer to it. Since 2000, the PARUS is being depicted as a completed building on calendars, in memes, in art projects and visualizations. For numerous citizens of Dnipro, it is a symbol of the city, although it is unfinished. "concrete and unclear" explores the diversity of PARUS's interpretations in various analog and digital media, and attempts to document the state of this collective dreaming.
